Pulsioxímetro
El pulsioxímetro es un aparato que sirve para medir de forma no invasiva y precisa la saturación de oxígeno en sangre y la frecuencia cardíaca. Su uso se ha extendido en el ámbito doméstico, por su pequeño tamaño y su fácil manejo. Es muy útil para personas con EPOC (enfermedad pulmonar obstructiva crónica), asma y otras enfermedades pulmonares.
En una persona sana la concentración de oxígeno en la sangre debe ser superior al 95%. En cambio, en aquellos casos en los que los niveles de oxígenos son bajos, menos del 90%, se produce hipoxemia. Uno de los principales síntomas de la hipoxemia es la falta de aire, siempre y cuando ésta aparezca sin causa aparente.
¿Cómo funciona el pulsioxímetro?
El pulsioxímetro es un aparato en forma de pinza que se coloca en el dedo del paciente. Tiene un emisor de luz y un sensor que recoge la misma, en la parte en la que se apoya la yema del dedo. Éste se encarga de evaluar el nivel de oxígeno en sangre, tomando como referencia el grado de azules que detecta en ella. Cuando la hemoglobina libera oxígeno pasa de un tono rosado a uno más azul, dificultando el paso de la luz roja, por lo que mayor a nivel de azul, más elevada será la presencia de O2 en la sangre.
